Analyse des campagnes SOLPER - 2005 à 2012 ArchiMer
Leaute, Jean-pierre; Aubert, Fabien; Lepareur, Fanny; Coupeau, Yann; Boiron-leroy, Anne.
A large number of studies on common sole have already been done for years by many research laboratories. This study sought to make a focus on a major nursery on the Atlantic coast, the Pertuis charentais, through the results of eight annual surveys (2005-2012) in late summer (SOLe PERtuis) targeting sole juveniles with a small beam trawl until subtidal zone (<1.50 m). Some of the results obtained in this report confirm previous studies, such as, among others, that more than 80% YOY (G0) occupy muddy or sandy mud bottom at a depth less than 5 m, or that there is a relative correlation between large rainfall in the spring, river flows and abundance of G0 in nursery.   However in the Pertuis Breton this correlation is little expressed by an extension of...

Effets des caractéristiques physico-chimiques et biorhéologiques de l'eau sur la physiologie, les performances adaptatives et la sélection de l'habitat chez la sole commune Solea solea (Linnaeus, 1758) ArchiMer
Couturier, Christine.
Shellfish culture can lead to an accumulation of exopolysaccharides (EPS) over the surface of intertidal mudflats. EPS are rheologically active polymers that change water viscosity and water flow over the branchial basket of the juvenile flatfish that colonise intertidal mudflats. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of water EPS content on various aspects of the physiology and behaviour of the common sole Solea solea. Field studies revealed that water total EPS can be up to 15 mg l 1 in the field. In sole juveniles (aged class 0+) ventilatory distress was observed at concentrations above 4 mg l-1, and the intensity of the constraint decreased with fish size. Nonetheless, neither standard metabolic rate nor tolerance of hypoxia were influenced...

Influence of ambient oxygenation and temperature on metabolic scope and scope for heart rate in the common sole Solea solea ArchiMer
Lefrancois, Christelle; Claireaux, Guy.
The objective of this study was to quantify the constraints exerted by temperature and oxygenation on both metabolic scope and scope for heart rate of the common sole Solea solea. We exposed sole to a large range of temperature and oxygenation conditions and a modelling procedure was implemented to describe metabolic and cardiac responses. Standard metabolic rate (SMR) rose exponentially from 4 to 24degreesC, whereas active metabolic rate (AMR) increased from 55.4 to 159.2 mgO(2) kg(-1) h(-1) between 4 and 19.7degreesC, and then dropped to 129.9 mgO(2) kg(-1) h(-1) at 24degreesC. In parallel, optimal temperature for maximising metabolic scope, defined as the difference between AMR and SMR, was estimated to 18.8degreesC. Active heart rates increased...

Influence of oil exposure on the physiology and ecology of the common sole Solea solea: Experimental and field approaches ArchiMer
Claireaux, Guy; Desaunay, Yves; Akcha, Farida; Auperin, Benoît; Bocquene, Gilles; Budzinski, Hélène; Cravedi, Jean-pierre; Davoodi, Fariba; Galois, Robert; Gilliers, Camille; Goanvec, Christelle; Guerault, Daniel; Imbert, Nathalie; Mazeas, Olivier; Nonnotte, Guy; Nonnotte, Liliane; Prunet, Patrick; Sebert, Philippe; Vettier, Aurélie.
Evaluating the ecological impact of an oil spill is a complex issue requiring coherently articulated examination of the sequence of interactions that link the cell, where contaminants exert their effects, to the ecosystem, where interactions with human activities arise. This sequence of interactions traverses the frontiers between scientific disciplines (chemistry, toxicology, physiology, and fisheries ecology). Using the common sole (Solea solea L.) as a model species for the coastal habitats polluted by the "Erika" oil spill, our research project attempted to define indices of functional integrity that characterised the consequences of fuel exposure at the different biological levels. The coupling of field observations with experimental laboratory work...

Population structure of the common sole (Solea solea) in the Northeastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea: revisiting the divide with EPIC markers ArchiMer
Rolland, Jean-luc; Bonhomme, Francois; Lagardere, Francoise; Hassan, M; Guinand, Bruno.
Spatial and temporal population genetic structures of the common sole, Solea solea, were studied in Northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea populations, using three polymorphic exon-primed intron-crossing (EPIC) markers. Results demonstrated significant multilocus differentiation among Eastern Mediterranean and a group composed by Western Mediterranean and Atlantic populations (theta = 0.150, P < 0.001), but also suggested unrecorded genetic differentiation of the Adriatic Sea population. No pattern of isolation-by-distance was recorded across the range covered by sampling, from the Kattegat to the Aegean Sea. Conversely to genetically structured Mediterranean populations, Atlantic populations ranging from Denmark to Portugal could be considered as...
