A large number of studies on common sole have already been done for years by many research laboratories. This study sought to make a focus on a major nursery on the Atlantic coast, the Pertuis charentais, through the results of eight annual surveys (2005-2012) in late summer (SOLe PERtuis) targeting sole juveniles with a small beam trawl until subtidal zone (<1.50 m). The objective of this study was to quantify the constraints exerted by temperature and oxygenation on both metabolic scope and scope for heart rate of the common sole Solea solea. We exposed sole to a large range of temperature and oxygenation conditions and a modelling procedure was implemented to describe metabolic and cardiac responses. Standard metabolic rate (SMR) rose exponentially from 4 to 24degreesC, whereas active metabolic rate (AMR) increased from 55.4 to 159.2 mgO(2) kg(-1) h(-1) between 4 and 19.7degreesC, and then dropped to 129.9 mgO(2) kg(-1) h(-1) at 24degreesC. Evaluating the ecological impact of an oil spill is a complex issue requiring coherently articulated examination of the sequence of interactions that link the cell, where contaminants exert their effects, to the ecosystem, where interactions with human activities arise. This sequence of interactions traverses the frontiers between scientific disciplines (chemistry, toxicology, physiology, and fisheries ecology). Spatial and temporal population genetic structures of the common sole, Solea solea, were studied in Northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea populations, using three polymorphic exon-primed intron-crossing (EPIC) markers. Results demonstrated significant multilocus differentiation among Eastern Mediterranean and a group composed by Western Mediterranean and Atlantic populations (theta = 0.150, P < 0.001), but also suggested unrecorded genetic differentiation of the Adriatic Sea population.
